Houston is a multi-faceted city not easily described in a few short words.

It's a cotton farming community, an oil producing area, an active shipping port, and a bustling tourist destination. It's also home to hi tech businesses, and the George Bush Airport.

You'll find cowboys and businessmen here, riding the same bus along side each other to work in the morning.

This city hasn't forgotten its roots, but hasn't remained stuck in the past, either.

Houston 's high technology reputation is well known. This is where the command center for the space program is located. While they may take off from Cape Canaveral, they are controlled and commanded from right here in the heart of Texas.

The city was named after Samuel Houston , an interesting general and politico who led the fight for freedom from Mexico. He was again called on to help out Texas when it became a state. Texas is the only state that was once its own country.

When you've spent some time here, you may believe that it still is! There is a feel about the state of Texas that you'll notice immediately.

The Admiral Nimitz Museum, for instance, is seven acres of restored fighter aircraft from the World War 2 era. History and aviation buffs will love wandering through the complex.
